Dr. Ferenc Dancs, Deputy State Secretary for Migration Challenges of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary deposited the instrument of ratification of the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement in WIPO. The Geneva Act is of great importance for Hungary because agriculture and food industry play a pivotal role in our economy. Many agricultural products are under protection by the Act, like the world famous TOKAJ wine, which comes from a romantic landscape of cellar labyrinths, vines and slopes, nestled at the foothills of the Zemplén Mountains. The GYULAI sausage, named after the town where the secret recipe of this spicy paprika flavoured sausage lie, is a well-known Hungarian GI. However, not only agricultural but also handicraft products enjoy this protection, such as the handmade, excellent quality porcelain of HEREND, measured by international standards.

These internationally renowned denominations not only contribute to improving Hungary's image but constitute a significant added value in the form of collective protection while maintaining the quality requirements of these products. The effect of these GIs on Hungary’s economy is undeniable, there sales value doubled since 2012 and reached EUR 397 million in 2017. The significance of the Act is that it permits the accession by certain intergovernmental organizations, thus creating the potential of having a more widespread protection if our GI products.
