December 10 is Human Rights Day, a day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly and the importance of securing human rights for all.

This year we celebrate the role of young people in bringing human rights to life and changing the world for the better. Young people have always been major drivers of political, economic and social change. In today’s challenging times, globally they organize themselves, speak up and stand out. Young people raise their voice for the equal rights of women and girls, for the right to a healthy environment, to participate in decision-making and to express their opinions freely.

It is our duty to ensure young people’s voices are heard and are taken seriously. Leaders of every society should be listening to their people, including young people, and acting in accordance with their needs and demands.

The Government of Hungary is deeply committed to the promotion and protection of human rights. We not only listen to young people but fully support them in their courageous endeavor to raise awareness of universal human rights principles. Young people are agents of change who can help to build better and more inclusive societies. Therefore, the Government of Hungary is determined to scale up its investment in young people, ensuring they are educated and empowered.

“Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies.’
