Hungary celebrates Human Rights Day and continues actively to take part in turning the ideals of the Universal Declaration into reality

We celebrate Human Rights Day on 10 December every year, in commemoration of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration, which is probably the most influential document in the long history of human rights was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Hungary, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council is firmly committed to the implementation of all human rights and will continue actively to take part in turning the ideals of the Universal Declaration into every day reality.

In this very spirit the Tenth Jubilee Budapest Human Rights Forum last November brought together national and international human rights experts, representatives of non-governmental and governmental organizations and the academia to discuss the security aspects of human rights in the context of four main topics:  sustainable peace, development, terrorism and violent extremism; protection of minorities and the convergences of human rights of indigenous peoples; protection of women’s rights and their implementation, hindering factors of the enforcement; and the Sustainable Development Goal 10 on the elimination of inequalities. https://ensz-genf.mfa.gov.hu/eng/news/BudapestHRForum

The Declaration is a milestone document that declared the inalienable rights everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language and political or other views.

Thanks to the Declaration, and States’ commitments to its principles, the daily life of millions has been improved, untold human suffering has been hampered and the foundations for a more just world have been laid.

The Declaration empowers us all. The principles enshrined in it are as relevant today as they were in 1948. We all need to stand up for own rights and those of others. As human beings, we all can take action in our own daily lives, to uphold the rights that protect us all and thereby promote the kinship of all human beings.

Next year we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration. Thus, this year’s Human Rights Day kicked off a year-long campaign, leading up to December 2018. We shall be under no illusion, the legacy of the Declaration is facing threats on many fronts. However, the support of the people for the implementation of international human rights has never been stronger. The acts of the 193 Member States of the United Nations are firmly supported by an unparalleled system of international human rights law, which facilitates the promotion and protection of all human rights. The priorities of everyone of us shall be the strengthening of the human rights mechanisms, enhancing equality and countering all forms of discrimination. We all need to raise our voices and act in defense of human decency, for the protection and promotion of human rights.
