Hungary joins the celebrations on the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and echoes the call by High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on “each of us to do our part to breathe life into the beautiful dream of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Hungary being an active member of the international community and a committed member of the Human Rights Council stands for the promotion and protection of human rights, democracy and fundamental freedoms. As the High Commissioner eloquently put, “everyone is entitled to all the freedoms listed in the Universal Declaration without distinction of any kind such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

The 70th Anniversary was also the central element of the 11th Budapest Human Rights Forum, recently organized in Hungary. President of the Human Rights Council Vojislav Šuc in his message to the Forum emphasized that “on the one hand, we are witnessing globalization bringing us the luxury to eat Hungarian Gulyas in Australia, and read the New York Times while drinking Colombian coffee in Jordan. On the other hand, we don’t have such a luxury on a global scale in consuming democracy, human rights and development.”
