The 42nd session of the Human Rights Council has started. In its first intervention Hungary stressed its standing determination in supporting the work of the Human Rights Council. Hungary reiterated its pledge to the protection and enhancement of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and as a country having a seat in this body already for the second time, once again called on the international community as a whole to make greater efforts and help making the Council even stronger and more effective in promoting and protecting human rights.

At these turbulent times, when human rights violations and abuses remain widespread, stronger commitment and better engagement to work with each other in a constructive manner are needed more than ever. The primary responsibility for promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms lies with the states. As Madame High Commissioner stated in her report this „Addressing those challenges is the responsibility of everyone and a fundamental issue of human rights.”. We believe that the international community as a whole shall stand together and use effectively all the tools at its disposal to prevent the occurrence of future human rights violations and abuses and to hold accountable those responsible.

Hungary is of the view that not only the States, but also the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Human Rights Council and the others parts of the UN’s human rights machinery have a crucial role to play in preventing future human rights atrocities. Hungary firmly believes that in today’s world direct efforts have vital importance to prevent, mitigate and end the gravest of crimes. With this in mind and in addition to urging all States to take the necessary steps, we also invite the relevant UN human rights bodies and experts to continue to step up their efforts within the framework of their code of conduct and other documents regulating their respective mandates and identify, also incorporate practical approaches to prevention in their assessments and recommendations.
