From 30 June to 17 July 2020, the 44th UN Human Rights Council session gathered in Geneva, addressing a wide range of thematic and country specific human rights issues and situations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the session was held in hybrid form, where a total of 23 resolutions were adopted. At the session, a core-group comprising of Hungary, Australia, Botswana, the Maldives, Mexico and Thailand presented two resolutions - one thematic and one mandate renewal - on the independence of judges and lawyers. These two resolutions enjoyed wide support and have been adopted by consensus. In addition to these initiatives, Hungary strongly supported a resolution on freedom of opinion and expression. We also lent our support to the resolutions on the right to education; on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; on the rights of persons with disabilities and the resolution on extreme poverty and human rights. All four resolutions decided to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on subject and were adopted by consensus. During this session, the issue of gender equality was in focus and we advocated for three resolutions on women’s and girls’ rights, namely a resolution on the elimination of female genital mutilation; a resolution on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls and a resolution on trafficking in persons, especially women and children. We also gave our support to the commemorative resolutions on the 15th anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect and the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.
