Many appellations of origin and geographical indications of Hungary were presented at the ceremony held in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on the occasion of the European Union’s accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement. The Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications was adopted in 2015 and recently reached a milestone enabling its entry into force, as the European Union (EU) joined as the key fifth member of the international registration system that provides protection for names identifying the geographic origin of products such as coffee, tea, fruits, wine, pottery, glass and cloth. The Agreement will enter into force for all its contracting parties on February 26, 2020. Many traditional Hungarian products are under the protection of the system, such as the HEREND porcelain, KALOCSAI, SZEGEDI paprika, wines from TOKAJ, EGER, MÓR, SOMLÓ, BALATONMELLÉK, BADACSONY, BALATONFÜRED-CSOPAK, DEBRŐ, SZEKSZÁRD, VILLÁNY-SIKLÓS, PÉCS-MECSEK, SOPRON,VERPELÉT, BUDAFOK, SOPRON, as well as the CSABAI and GYULAI sausages, and also KECSKEMÉTI, SZATMÁRI spirits, BONYHÁD enamelware, SZENTGOTTHARD fencing blade, and finally, alginate de GÉRCE.

On the occasion of the EU’s accession to the Agreement, a ceremony was held in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). After the ceremony, the participants had the pleasure to taste and view the different products of the EU Member States that are under the protection of the system. The HEREND porcelain received a special exhibition space and Hungarian wines and sausages were extremely popular amongst participants.
